Jo Anne Shatkin, Ph.D., is Managing Director of CLF Ventures, Inc., non-profit affiliate of the Conservation Law Foundation. she provides technical and strategic expertise on projects and manages the day-to-day operations of CLF Ventures. Dr. Shatkin is a recognized expert in strategic environmental initiatives, human health risk assessment, technical communications, and environmental aspects of nanotechnology. She brings expertise on approaches for evaluating new and emerging contaminants in the environment, particularly on assessments of chemical and microbial concerns that inform policy development. Dr. Shatkin is a Research Fellow At The George Perkins Marsh Institute at Clark University. Her research interests include developing risk-informed management tools for environmental health and safety evaluations, community based research, and cumulative risk assessment approaches. Dr. Shatkin has 18 years of experience in research and application of quantitative human health risk assessment, develop screening level (semi-qualitative) risk assessment protocols and risk based prioritization approaches, environmental chemistry, assessing chemical bioavailability, multimedia and cumulative risk assessments of novel emerging contaminants and mixtures, models for characterizing and reducing uncertainty in exposure assessment, and in technical support for advisory and stakeholder outreach and communication. Dr. Shatkin has extensive experience in human health risk assessment, managing over 60 environmental risk assessments under a variety of US federal, state, and voluntary programs, many under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan. Her expertise includes technical analyses for policy development, screening level risk assessments to compare and prioritize environmental issues, exposure assessment, dermal exposure evaluations and modeling, and use of chemical speciation in risk assessment. She received her Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy in 1994 and her MA in Risk Management and Technology Assessment, both from Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts and possesses a Bachelor of Science degree from Worcester Polytechnic University in Biology and Biotechnology. Prior to joining Ventures, Jo Anne managed a human health risk assessment and nanotechnology practice for The Cadmus Group. She brings a wealth of experience in research and application of quantitative human health risk assessment for site redevelopment and remediation; drinking water and air quality, and environmental evaluations of emerging contaminants. Her specialty is the application and communication of innovative science-informed analysis to address complex emerging issues affecting businesses and communities. Dr Shatkin has been an active member of the Society for Risk Analysis since 1989, and recently founded the Emerging Nanoscale Materials Specialty Group of the Society for Risk Analysis. Dr Shatkin serves as President of the New England Chapter of the Society for Risk Analysis; former Chapter & Section Committee Chair for the Society for Risk Analysis; past Board Member and President of the Regional Environmental Council, member of the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority Expert Risk Panel, and committee member of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Science Advisory Panel for Solid Waste.
