California Fall Fellows Retreat

Friday, October 2, 2015 (All day) - Sunday, October 4, 2015 (All day)

NatureBridge, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Sausalito, CA

Our fall retreat brings together new Fellows and alumni for a weekend of learning, networking, and socializing!  Please note, the registration deadline has passed.  If you are interested in attending the retreat, please contact Erin Lloyd, Program Director.

For directions and venue information, please visit the NatureBridge website.

FRIDAY, October 2nd

Welcome and orientation for 2015 Fellows.  Fellowship Alumni welcome to join for dinner.

1:30 pm        CHECK-IN

2 – 3 pm       INTRODUCTIONS, ORIENTATION FOR NEW FELLOWS.  We will introduce ourselves, and basic information about the Fellowship and the Foundation, as well as presentation of leadership concepts to be explored throughout the weekend.

3 – 5 pm        FLASH TALKS.  A great way to share information and seek collaboration among your colleagues!  Presenters may bring up to four slides and will have four minutes to pitch an idea, seek input into a project or problem they are trying to solve, or test a message they want to deliver.  This is similar to “Pecha Kucha” or other “lightning talks” that emphasize a concise pitch for feedback on an idea.

5 – 6 pm        FREE TIME (take a walk, set up your sleeping arrangements, check out the beach!)

6 – 7 pm        DINNER

SATURDAY, October 3rd

8 – 9 am               BREAKFAST and check-in for new arrivals

9 – 5 pm               TRAINING:  TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP (for 2015 Fellows and others).  The Switzer Foundation will continue its partnership with the Rockwood Leadership Institute to offer a one day transformative leadership workshop for Fellows.  Rockwood Leadership Institute teaches skills and tools that help social change leaders overcome leadership challenges; develop collaborative skills; decrease “burn-out”; and create organizations that celebrate sustainability and diversity.  The session is designed to help you understand personal awareness as part of collaborative leadership, increase your skillfulness in working across difference, and increase your personal sustainability.  It will be a significant opportunity to build community with other Fellows and strengthen your own leadership practice.

9 - 4 pm                WORKSHOP:  RACE, PRIVILEGE AND OPPRESSION IN ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP (for Fellowship alumni).  This workshop is being designed especially for Fellowship alumni and will run parallel to the Rockwood training, giving alumni a choice of sessions.  This alumni track will be facilitated by trainers at Visions, Inc. and will focus on race, privilege and power in our lives and in our environmental work.  As Switzer Fellows, we work across a range of issues and are of many racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and gendered groups.  How can we as a community, and as individuals, learn to be active participants in the groundswell of attention to the racial divides in our world with cultural humility, compassion and openness?  How can we better work across our differences and strengthen our relationships as allies?  There are many pressing environmental issues that we all work on, but the calling to build deeper racial awareness and understanding is a critical leadership capacity to which we invite all Switzer Fellows to commit.

5 - 6 pm                RECEPTION - KICK-OFF TO OUR 30th ANNIVERSARY!  Join staff, Trustees, and Fellows to unwind, relax, and kick off a year of special 30th anniversary events!  Weekend participants will be joined by Fellow alumni coming to help us celebrate for the remainder of the weekend.  (Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks available.)

6 - 7 pm                DINNER

7 - 9 pm                SOCIAL TIME

9 pm                     CAMPFIRE (weather permitting) - Fellows, please bring stories and/or musical instruments!  There is nothing more relaxing than a campfire, some music, and good stories.  A great way to close out the day.

SUNDAY, October 4th

8 – 9 am               BREAKFAST

9:30 - noon           FELLOW NETWORKING.  Weekend retreat participants will be joined by Fellowship alumni who are joining us for the day for discussions or outdoor activities.  Participants can choose whether to engage in small group discussions on topics of interest, or join alumni for a hike in the Marin Headlands, hang out at the beach, or other family-friendly activities.
