The Switzer Foundation is working with colleagues from the David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program to offer a training opportunity in Washington, D.C., on the implications of national policy-making for conservation professionals.  There is space for five Switzer Fellows to attend this workshop.  The workshop is geared towards Fellows working in conservation-related fields, but lessons learned can be applied across a multitude of sectors.  Preference, however, will be given to Fellows working in conservation science and policy.

Wednesday, January 11 - Thursday, January 12, 2012:  Workshop

Friday, January 13, 2012:  Optional "behind the scenes" field trip to the Smithsonian

Friday evening, January 13:  Happy Hour with D.C.-based environmental professionals - open to all D.C.-based Switzer Fellows, whether attending the workshop or not

Workshop Location:

Phoenix Park Hotel, 520 North Capitol Street NW, Washington, D.C.

$210/night lodging (single occupancy), plus meals.  Total per person costs TBD.  Limited travel support available.  No additional registration costs.

Deadline:  November 30, 2011 - contact Erin Lloyd, Program Officer

Goals of the Workshop:

  1. To create an awareness of the U.S. national policy-making process
  2. To create an awareness of how to work with Congressional delegations
  3. To understand the breadth of potential policy implications for participants' work

Over two days, various speakers and panelists will discuss the conservation issues at play in D.C. and policy-making in the various branches of federal government, and offer a guided tour of the Capitol.  There may also be a chance for participants to schedule a meeting with the office of their Senator(s), Representative(s), and/or a committee pertinent to their research or organizational priorities.
