Green Chemistry and Thinking Without Borders:  Stories on the Power and Perils of Interdisciplinary Work

A conversation with Dr. Michael P. Wilson, Executive Director , UC Berkeley's Center for Green Chemistry

Please join Switzer Foundation staff, trustees and colleagues for an evening reception with food and drink following our annual Board meeting!

We will be featuring 2002 Switzer Fellow and Switzer Leadership Program Grantee Mike Wilson, Executive Director of the Center for Green Chemistry at UC Berkeley's Institute of the Environment. Mike will talk about his work on green chemistry policy at state, national and international levels, and lessons learned in navigating a major shift in academic, government and corporate policy.

Michael Wilson is a research scientist at the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, and Acting Executive Director of the newly formed Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry. The Center links three interdisciplinary spheres of inquiry for the purpose of advancing green chemistry: New  Chemistries, Health and Environmental, and Policy and Economy.  Dr. Wilson received his Masters of Public Health and PhD degrees in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley and his bachelors degree in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.  He serves on the California Green Ribbon Science Panel (under AB 1879) and the state’s Biomonitoring Scientific Guidance Panel (under SB 1379). His work linking
green chemistry with chemicals policy helped launch the California Green Chemistry Initiative and its ongoing implementing legislation. Abroad, he is
a member of the International Panel on Chemical Pollution in Stockholm, Sweden and the International Scientific Advisory Committee for Sustainable Chemistry in Antwerp, Belgium. His two most recent papers, published in Environmental Health Perspectives and Science in 2009, explore the role of green chemistry and the environmental health sciences in chemicals policy reform.
