Stephen Wald

Steve is a senior advisor to the executive director of the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability (INRS) at the University of Illinois. The Institute encompasses roughly 600 researchers spanning the biological, earth, and environmental sciences, focused on practical and applied questions of resource sustainability. Prior to his work at INRS, Steve pursued a mid-career Master’s in public policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, with the support of the Switzer Foundation. His graduate work focused on state and regional approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with an eye to whether and how these may evolve into national policy. In graduate schoo, Steve was a research assistant to Professor Robert Reich and an energy and environment fellow for U.S. Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) in the summer of 2006. Prior to graduate school, Steve directed the California Hydropower Reform Coalition, an association of 30 river conservation and recreation organizations working to restore rivers affected by California's vast network of hydropower dams. During his six year tenure, the coalition forged innovative agreements with resource agencies and dam owners to restore flows to over 140 river miles, breech or remove three dams, and enhance river and riparian habitat. He also helped broker the historic agreement to permanently protect 140,000 acres of watershed land surrounding PG&E's hydropower system. Prior to CHRC, Steve worked to mitigate the impacts of the Columbia River hydropower system at the Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Authority, an association of federal and state agencies and tribes in Portland, Oregon.
