Leadership Grant

Communities 21 Program

40,000 awarded to ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability in

This grant supported the expansion of Garrett Fitzgerald’s position at ICLEI to include bringing the Communities 21 Program up to full capacity, taking the lead on this initiative for the organization.  This project will allow Garrett to develop, launch and implement the Communities 21 (C21) program, a participatory sustainability planning and sustainable development initiative, which now exists in a fledgling state within ICLEI. C21 was originally introduced by ICLEI as a result of the 1992 U.N. Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro (from the Local Agenda 21 program, a comprehensive plan of action that was to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organizations of the U.N. system). Garrett will develop this fledgling program into a fully-functioning, performance-based sustainability planning program for local governments nationwide. Garrett will engage local communities and bring them into the C21 program with the goal of fostering sustainable communities nationwide.
