Promoting Clean Energy and Good Jobs in the Western States, Year 1

Grant Type:

  • Leadership Program

Award Date:

May 2005

Portland, OR

This grant was made to The Apollo Alliance to hire Jeremy Hays as one of its two Western States organizers. Jeremy's responsibilities will include establishing, supporting, and guiding state level coalitions of environmental, labor, civil rights and business groups to enact policies and projects that promote clean energy and good jobs. He will develop strong coalitions in five key western states (CA, AZ, CO, MT and OR). He will play a lead role in identifying and establishing key policy and demonstration projects in each of those states that aim to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and create good-paying jobs. The ultimate plan is to get labor and environmental interests and low-income communities involved in pushing for green energy jobs. As organizer, Jeremy will keep the process moving and help provide valuable resources and information.

Spotlight on Leadership

The realization that individual action has little to no impact on major environmental problems — to say nothing of the existential threat of climate change — can prompt despair, 1995 Fellow Paul Steinberg, a professor of political science and environmental policy at Harvey Mudd College, says. But it doesn’t have to. We could try, instead, consulting social scientists, who have spent a lot of time thinking about just this problem: How can a single individual can act in a way that effects large-scale change?Read more >
