About Ruth's Work
Ruth is an professor and Director of the Center for Health and the Built Environment in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning Department and an affiliate faculty in the Transportation Research Center and the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Florida. Her research interests include the connections between land use and transportation, especially active modes of transportation and their affect on the environment, health and communities. energy. Her current research projects include the development of tools for assessment of multimodal transportation environments, in creating pedestrian--and bicycle--friendly communities, the full costs of school transportation, planning for an aging population, and brownfield redevelopment. She received her BA in History from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Masters and Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning at the University of California at Berkeley. In addition, to her work experience as a policy analyst at the Public Service Board in Vermont, she was a Sierra Club activist in the Midwest in the 1980s.
