Cano seeks support to rebuild bee research after fire

Fellow(s): Alejandra Cano

In May, Alejandra Cano’s research home, equipment and academic work were lost in a devastating house fire. Alejandra lost years of work with Indigenous communities in Columbia centered on conserving native stingless honeybees, critical pollinators and producers of medicinal honey. The fire has also turned her dreams of creating a pollinator sanctuary on the property to ashes.

“I believe that ashes can nourish blossoms,” Alejandra says in a video asking for support. “We want to rebuild this space into a living space. A place to plant, to care, to teach, to learn and to keep dreaming with these bees.”

Her community has launched a gofundme to support rebuilding. Should any fellows want to be connected with Alejandra or share verbal support, please pass those requests/affirmations on to Cora and we will make sure she gets them.
