Levy launches Scientess podcast about women's joy in science

Fellow(s): Karen Levy

Karen Levy recently started Scientess, a podcast for women about the joy of science, and why women might want to consider a career in science. Karen talks to women with successful careers in science about how they did it, why they did it, and what they love about the work that they do.

“In the Scientess podcast, we flip the script on that narrative. Instead of focusing on the issues that keep women from going into scientific careers, we are talking about what makes women wake up in the morning and head into the field or into the lab to make discoveries,” Karen said on LinkedIn.

Season 1 features several powerhouse earth/environmental scientists, such as: Rita Colwell (the first woman to lead the U.S. National Science Foundation), Asmeret Asefaw Berhe (a soil scientist who served as the Department of Energy Office of Science director from 2022 to 2024), Pat Conrad (a parasitologist with a OneHealth emphasis), and Bobbi Peckarsky (a stream ecologist).

You can listen to the show on various podcast platforms, and find it on Instagram @scientesspodcast.
