About Ryan's Work

Ryan’s is interested in coupling applied ecology, habitat management, and policy to create effective management for threatened species and ecosystems. As Science Director for the environmental non-profit Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge, Ryan works on conservation of birds and their habitats in the U.S. and Chile. Ryan also leads research and conservation efforts for saline lakes across the Americas, with an emphasis on how migratory Wilson's phalaropes connect saline lakes as a network. Ryan enjoys collaborating with artists, writers, designers, and scientists to create innovative solutions for wildlife conservation and education. Ryan also is a lecturer with the Environmental Studies department at University of California, Santa Cruz, where has taught Natural History Field Quarter and other experiential natural history courses. Ryan has worked with a variety of organizations, including the Mono Lake Committee, the International Crane Foundation, Point Reyes Bird Observatory, California State Parks, and Friends of the Inyo.
