About Thomas E.'s Work

Tom Gill is Professor of Earth, Environmental & Resource Sciences and Environmental Science & Engineering at the University of Texas, El Paso (UTEP). He teaches classes in earth science, atmospheric science, environmental science, and climate science. His research focuses on environmental processes in the desert borderlands of southwestern North America, especially as they relate to air quality. Tom is an internationally-known expert on dust storms, atmospheric particulate matter, the global transport of air pollutants, and their effects on society, ecosystems, and human health. He is a Registered Geologist in the state of Texas. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1995 from UC Davis, he worked as a physical scientist for the USDA Agricultural Research Service and as a research faculty member at Texas Tech University before accepting a professorship at UTEP in 2004. Dr. Gill is the co-founder and an executive committee member of the Dust Alliance for North America (dustalliance.org). He received the Distinguished Career Award from the International Society for Aeolian Research.
