Do the Math - fossil fuel divestiture gains steam

A month ago I was pleased and proud to be in attendance at the Portland, Maine stop for Bill McKibben’s “Do the Math” tour. His month long series of rallies helped build a campaign that is rapidly gaining attention – to recognize that if we...

Chase against extending Yankee reactor's life

On the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 7, more than 250 members of the public from Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts packed the elementary school gym in Vernon, Vt., for the first of two public hearings held by Vermont’s three-member Public Service Board. The topic at hand was whether the board should grant the Entergy Corp. a certificate of public good that would legally authorize the company to run the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor for 20 years past the original 40-year license period, which ended last March. Jones launches new online tool for estimating long-term climate change from today's actions

The climate change debate typically divides Americans into two camps: Hot and cold. I’m starting my own camp: Hungry. Three years earlier, the aging Byrd said it's time to "speak the truth" and "have an open and honest dialogue about coal's future in West Virginia.

Luers and Heller featured in article on women in climate sciences

Environmental scientist Amy Luers found the nonprofit setting more fitting than academia for her career goals. "I wanted to be at the intersection of science, policy and action," she said. That would have been hard to do as an academic scientist, she said. "It's rare that a scientist at an academic research institution gets to really see the fruits of their labor put into practice in a significant way in their lifetime," said Luers, climate change director for the Skoll Global Threats Fund, a San Francisco-based non-profit. ...

Wolf says Frankenstorms will continue

Climate change is raising sea levels and altering the jet stream in the U.S., making already powerful storms like Sandy stronger, scientists with a conservation group said. Storms will grow unless greenhouse emissions are cut, the Tucson, Arizona-based Center for Biological Diversity said last night in a statement.
